This book is based on a workshop on biogeography of freshwater algae held during the Fifth International Phycological Congress in China 1994. A group of outstanding specialists covering widely different approaches to the subject have been brought together, and this collection of their contributions forms a unique volume: there is no other book on the subject. It thus fills an evident gap in the phycological literature, and will be of major interest to researchers and teachers within phycology, limnology, and evolutionary biology. However, it may also be useful in courses for advanced students.

2. Genome rearrangement and speciation in freshwater algae.- 3. Biodiversity, biogeography and conservation of diatoms.- 4. Geographic distribution of freshwater blue-green algae.- 5. Biogeography of desmids.- 6. Quantitative analysis on euglenoid distribution in seven regions of China.- 7. Tundra stream macroalgae of North America: composition, distribution and physiological adaptations.- 8. Biogeography of Vaucheria species from European freshwater/soil habitats: implications from chloroplast genomes.- 9. The algal flora of the Primorsky Region, Russian Far East.- 10. Snow algae of the Windmill Islands region, Antarctica.- 11. The Indo-Malaysian North-Australian phycogeographical region revised.- 12. Bipolarity in the distribution of silica-scaled chrysophytes.- 13. Endemism in freshwater algae.- 14. Are the impacts of events in the Earth’s history discernable in the current distributions of freshwater algae.- 15. Three Rumanian Mallomonas species (Synurophyceae), with special distribution patterns.- 16. Dispersal of freshwater algae — a review.- 17. Biogeography of freshwater algae — conclusions and perspectives.
