Following the example of the First Edoardo Amaldi Conference, which took place in Frascati, Italy, in 1994, this conference brought together scientists from all over the world involved in the various aspects of today's gravitational-wave research. The meeting provided a forum for discussing the recent developments in this field and promoted coordinated efforts towards an international network of gravitational-wave detectors. This volume records the state-of-the-art of gravitational-wave experiments, including interferometers, resonant-mass and Doppler tracking detectors. An entire section is devoted to the subject of data analysis. The latest theoretical investigations on all possible gravitational-wave sources, with fascinating subjects such as black holes and cosmic stochastic background, are also presented. Various problems and perspectives of this research are reported in clear topical contributions.
Gravitational radiation and the validity of general relativity, C.M. Will; black holes and gravitational waves, R.H. Price; gravitational radiation from core collapse supernovae, E. Muller; binaries that emit strong gravitational waves, F. Verbunt; testing string cosmology with gravity wave detectors, M. Gasperini; the LIGO project - progress and plans, P. Fritschel; VIRGO - status report, November 1997, A. Brillet et al; LISA - new developments in design, J. Hough et al; the resonant mass detectors of the Rome group, G.V. Pallottino; the ALLEGRO detector and the future of resonant detectors in the USA, W.O. Hamilton; present status of the resonant mass gravitational wave antenna, NIOBE, D.G. Blair et al; initial operations of the gravitational wave detector AURIGA, G.A. Prodi et al. (Part contents).
