This study provides a review of the technique of "warm" heart surgery, setting out its advantages and disadvantages. Most cardiac surgery is carried out under conditions of hypothermia in order to slow the heartbeat. However, this method does involve risks, particularly ischaemia of the heart muscles. In high-risk patients and for high-risk procedures, there is now a trend towards "warm" (that is, normal body temperature) surgery. The book is aimed at cardiac surgeons, cardiothoracic anaesthetists and perfusionists.
Historical aspects of cardioplegia; origin of warm heart surgery; research on myocardial protection; cardioplegic delivery systems; retrograde warm blood cardioplegia; simultaneous antegrade/retrograde; warm heart surgery paediatrics; mitral valve surgery with warm heart surgery; horrendous problems using warm heart surgery; technical aspects of warm heart surgery; visualization during warm heart surgery; monitoring of the heart during warm heart surgery; pitfalls of warm heart surgery; perfusionist views of warm heart surgery; nursing aspects of warm heart surgery; systemic effects of normothermic perfusion; innervation of heart; results of warm heart surgery; cerebral effects of warm heart surgery; haematological effects of warm heart surgery; warm heart surgery in transplantation; adjunct or alternative.
