The proceedings of a conference on visual search processing, held in Durham in September 1988. The speakers are from various locations throughout the world and the main theme is the optimization of visual search. The three major papers, given by invited speakers, are on the subjects of industrial inspection, visual attention and automatic inspection. They were given, respectively, by Professor C.G.Drury of SUNY in the USA, Professor C.W.Eriksen of the University of Illinois and Dr E.Persoon of OPR in The Netherlands. Approximately 40 of the shorter papers are also included, as is a summary of the conference workshop.
Part 1 Attention and segmentation: attention search of the visual field, C.W.Eriksen; automatic or voluntary allocation of attention in a visual search, B.J.Krose and B.Julesz. Part 2 Eye movements: eye movements in continuous search; effects of category relationship, D.Nattkemper and W.Prinz; eye movement in reading - optimal landing position and usefulness of peripheral preview, F.Vitu and J.K.O'Regan. Part 3 Computer vision: automatic inspection, E.H.J.Persoon; visual search with decrementing network competitive windows, V.G.Dobson. Part 4 Search modelling: visual search in industrial inspection, C.G.Drury; computer evaluation of preattentive mechanisms in vision - emergent what and where, J.F.Gerrisson. Part 5 Applied aspects of search: visual detection performance in a vigilance task when using a colour display, H.Widdel and C.Pfendler.
