This reference book reviews the role of the oral microbiome in health and well-being. It explores diverse oral bacteria and dietary influences and discusses oral microbiome involvement in infections, cancer, and cardiac diseases. This book is intended for researchers in microbiology, immunology, dentistry, and oral health.
This book comprehensively reviews the intricate and multifaceted role of the oral microbiome in overall health and well-being. The introductory chapters present the diverse bacterial consortium inhabiting the oral cavity and the influence of dietary habits on the nature of the oral microbiome. The book investigates the link between the gut microbiome and susceptibility to disease, expanding the understanding of the interconnectedness of the human microbiota. Further, the book discusses the involvement of the oral microbiome in acute and chronic infections and addresses the concerning issue of drug resistance within this complex environment. It unveils the connection between the oral microbiome and mouth cancer and malignancies, presenting critical insights into disease prevention and management. The book also expands the scope, examining the role of the oral microbiome in systemic infections and revealing connections between oral bacteria and cardiac diseases. Towards the end, the book explores the pivotal role of oral microbiota in children's well-being and reviews the various diagnostic techniques associated with the oral microbiome. This book is intended for researchers in the fields of microbiology, immunology, dentists, oral health specialists, physicians, and healthcare practitioners.

Dr. Shamsher S. Kanwar is a Professor of Biotechnology and serves as the Director of the IPRCC at Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla, India. In the past, he has received several awards and fellowships, including a Visiting Fellowship from the Indian National Science Academy in 1998–99, which allowed him to conduct research in the molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis at CDRI, Lucknow. He was also granted a Visiting Fellowship for the year 1999–2000 by the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC), Department of Science and Technology in New Delhi, to research multi-drug-resistant (MDR) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis at the National Institute of Mycobacterial Diseases in Agra. In 2005–06, he received a Biotechnology Overseas Associateship from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, to work on the interaction of HIV-Tat and drug abuse on human neural cells at Kansas University Medical College in Kansas, USA. Furthermore, he served as a Visiting Scholar in a Program on Mouse Adult Pluripotent Cells at the Stem Cell Institute, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA, in May–June 2008. Dr. Kanwar's research focuses on microbiology, immunology, cell culture, and fermentation, with an emphasis on developing bio-products and bioprocesses, particularly for a range of extracellular microbial enzymes, as an alternative to traditional antibiotics and antilipolytic drugs. Currently, Dr. Kanwar is dedicated to the development of anticancer therapeutics through the exploration of microbial ribonuclease, cholesterol oxidase, and L-methionase. Dr. Rajesh Kumar presently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biosciences at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India. With over 10 years of teaching and research experience, his primary areas of research interest are Animal Physiology and Applied Zoology. Dr. Kumar has a remarkable track record, having published more than 100 research articles in highly reputable journals. He has received 12 awards for his outstanding research contributions. Additionally, Dr. Kumar has successfully completed two Major Research Projects and two Startup Projects sponsored by government agencies.
