Combines the topics of intercellular communication and signal transduction, hormonal communication, and comparison of the nervous and endocrine systems with those of neuronal physiology, synapses, and neuronal integration.
Lauralee Sherwood's "Human Physiology" is the leading physiology text, and in this edition, she has made this text even more up-to-date, accurate and easy to use. The organization has shifted slightly with a new Chapter 4, "Principles of Neural and Hormonal Communication," that now combines the topics of intercellular communication and signal transduction, hormonal communication, and comparison of the nervous and endocrine systems with those of neuronal physiology, synapses, and neuronal integration. The overwhelmingly praised central theme of homeostasis continues to open and close each chapter and helps students better understand how the systems of the body work together. Media tools for learning and teaching continue to be a key strength. For students, "PhysioEdge", a text-correlated CD-ROM with tutorials and quizzes, accompanies each new copy. Text icons mark figures that are animated. 'PhysioEdge' focuses on the most difficult concepts and, with a strong diagnostic component, gives students immediate feedback on their quiz answers.PhysioEdge is a smart program, too - raising the level of difficulty of questions as a student's performance improves!
For instructors, the new PowerLecture tool offers easier Lecture Prep. PowerLecture tool puts all chapter lecture resources into a single PowerPoint tool. Each chapter's lecture slides include these resources, organized by chapter section: all chapter illustrations, diagrams and photos, bulleted points on key content, and all the animations and interactions from PhysioEdge. Plus PowerLecture also offers the ability to edit the lecture slides, to present art in segments, to select and enlarge portions of a figure, to edit or remove labels or to present one label at a time, as well as Word files of the Instructor's Resource Manual and Test Bank for each chapter.

Following graduation from Michigan State University in 1966, Dr. Lauralee Sherwood joined the faculty at West Virginia University, where she is currently a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, School of Medicine. For the past 40 years, Professor Sherwood has taught an average of over 400 students each year in physiology courses for pharmacy, medical technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, medical, dental, dental hygiene, nutrition, exercise physiology and athletic training majors. She has authored three physiology textbooks: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY: FROM CELLS TO SYSTEMS, FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSIOLOGY: A HUMAN PERSPECTIVE, and ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY: FROM GENES TO ORGANISMS, all published by Thomson Brooks/Cole. Dr. Sherwood has received numerous teaching awards, including an Amoco Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award, a Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Faculty Award, two listings in WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS, and the Dean's Award of Excellence in Education.
