This textbook is for house surgeons and final-year medical students. The first part of the book covers general surgical management and ward care. The second part deals with individual surgical conditions. The book gives details of day-to-day management of patients including the steps needed to make and prove a diagnosis, and to prepare the patient for surgery. This edition has been updated and revised throughout, and new sections include AIDS, surgical audit, hepatic surgery and lymphoedema. Sections on diagnosis and management are laid out in a similar way to cover the condition, making the diagnosis, proving the diagnosis, pre-operative management, operative details and post-operative care. Each operation is coded to give figures for amount of blood to cross match, type of anaesthetic, operative time, post-operative stay, time off work, and the time at which drains and sutures should be removed.
