The use and trade of medicinal plants in Southern Africa has been recognised as providing important primary health care benefits and livelihood opportunities, and being culturally significant. This industry and its current roleplayers are, however, threatened by a number of factors, including unsustainable and declining raw material supplies, unsupportive legislative frameworks, poor organisation, limited capacity, and new entrants into the industry with commercial interests.
Nicci Diederichs is a professional environmental sustainability and natural resource management consultant. She is currently the Managing Director of FutureWorks, a Durban-based consultancy group. Nicci has been consulting successfully for 12 years throughout southern Africa, and has co-authored two books, and published 15 journal articles and other popular publications. Her key interests are centred on finding innovative ways to establish business opportunities and jobs through the sustainable utilisation of natural resources, and the development of "green" products and services.
