Ken Wright is Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology at USC in Los Angeles and a professor in the ophthalmology department. Ed Buckley is a professor and residency director Ophthalmology at Duke. Elias Traboulsi is Director, Center for Genetic Eye Diseases at Cole Eye Institute and Chairman of Graduate Medical Education at the Cleveland Clinic. The third edition will be wholly revised. The basic editorial strategy is going to be 'keep it simple,' with the chapter authors taking care to explain esoteric terms and provide clear algorithms for difficult diagnosis and complex treatment regimens. We will reduce significantly the editorial redundancy to shorten the book 150/200 pages. All the chapters will have an evidence-based approach, the chapter authors providing the kind of EBM tables included in Chang and Norton. The new edition will also have a more focused approach to the molecular medicine/genetic basis of disease, mirroring the scientific progress in the research end of the field.Chapters will have more structured organization (overview; etiology; clinical findings; genetic considerations/hereditary factors; surgical and therapeutic treatment ; outcomes).
Where controversy exists, the authors are encouraged to address the points of contention directly, providing sufficient information for readers. We're including a chapter on non-accidental eye injury and other topics related to child abuse, including reporting obligations. To enhance the surgical strengths of the book, we are going to include a DVD with real time, narrated video surgery clips. One of the chapters is recognized as especially helpful by several reviews "Ocular Manifestations of Inherited Disease." The authors will create an electronic database version of this chapter with patient information pages physicians can print for families, providing an overview of the disorder and web-based resources.
