Fundamentals of Biomechanics: From Cells to Organ Systems combines biology with engineering to provide a comprehensive overview of biomechanics. It covers cell, tissue, and fluid mechanics in a way that is easy to understand, requiring only a basic background in biology and mechanics. The book includes a wide range of topics, from single-cell mechanics to forces in the musculoskeletal system. Each chapter provides an introduction to biological systems, along with examples and practice problems throughout the text. The book also offers step-by-step derivation of equations from principles. This textbook has been classroom-tested and is designed for advanced undergraduate engineering courses in bioengineering, biomechanics, and physiology. It is also a valuable reference for graduate students, practicing engineers, and medical professionals.

  • Integrates biology with engineering;
  • Includes examples and practice problems throughout the text;
  • Requires a limited background in biology and mechanics.

Sina Rabbany, Ph.D., is Dean of the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science at Hofstra University. He is the Jean Nerken Distinguished Professor of Engineering and the Founding Director of the Bioengineering program. He has been involved in teaching and training engineering students and has made significant contributions to the science of learning in bioengineering and biophysics. The primary focus of his research is in the field of cellular and tissue engineering applied to the vascular system. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He has received funding from the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Health, and the Office of Naval Research. Dr. Rabbany holds BSE cum laude, MSE, and Ph.D. degrees in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

David Rooney, Ph.D., is a Professor of Engineering and Associate Dean of the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science at Hofstra University. His published research is primarily in experimental aerodynamics, focusing on vortex shedding and wake flows behind different structural geometries. He has taught many mechanical engineering courses in solid and fluid mechanics and civil engineering courses in soil mechanics, structural analysis, and foundation design. He earned his Ph.D. in Marine Science and Engineering from North Carolina State University.

Nick Merna, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Bioengineering Program at the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science at Hofstra University. He earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, and a BS in Bioengineering from UCLA. Dr. Merna teaches undergraduate classes in bioengineering, cell and tissue engineering, biomechanics, and computer programming. His research interests include plant and animal-based decellularization, the design of bioreactor systems, and the development of tissue-engineered vascular grafts. His research team comprises undergraduate bioengineering students and collaborators from the Department of Engineering and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
