This new book unlocks the world of clinical echocardiography to the non-cardiologist and brings echocardiography out of the cardiology departments and onto the hospital wards and intensive care units. Using an integrated approach it explains echocardiography in the context of the scenario the clinician is presented with - in other words "Echocardiology". Adapting a question driven, probing approach to allow the echocardiogram to provide answers to simple "rule-in" and "rule-out" questions, it explains the mechanisms that underlie the physics of echocardiography, how the machine works and how to perform a study. It provides an outline of the role of echocardiography in all of the clinical scenarios commonly experienced by the physician practising acute general internal medicine managing patients with cardiac problems.

1. Foreword - A question driven approach to Echocardiology 2. Why use point of care echocardiography (validation, identification of occult disease, training)? 3. The Physics of ultrasound explained (ultrasound generation, simple physics) 4. How to perform a point of care echocardiogram (Knobology, views, recording) 5. Clinical Echo-Anatomy -A Normal Study (Anatomical specimens, echo and line drawings) 6. Heart failure? 7. Ischaemic heart disease? 8. Pericardial effusion and tamponade? 9. Pulmonary embolism? 10. Dissection of the aorta? 11. Systolic murmur? 12. Infective endocarditis? 13. Point of care echo on the critical care unit (Limitations, role, haemodynamics) 14. Echocardiography during cardiopulmonary resuscitation 15. Reporting (How to report, how to record) 16. Clinical algorithms 17. Table of normal values Each clinical chapter will start with history, examination and standard investigations and then illustrate the integration of echo into the normal clinical evaluations. The sensitivity and specificity of echocardiography for diagnosis and assessment will be discussed.
