Part of the Oxford Specialist Handbooks in Cardiology series, Paediatric Cardiology provides essential insights into the diagnosis, management, and care of young patients with heart conditions.
While paediatric cardiology may be a small specialty, it is important to note that congenital heart disease ranks as the most prevalent congenital condition globally. As a result, cardiac problems form a significant part of the workload of many general paediatricians, neonatologists, and other paediatric specialists. Beyond congenital heart conditions, acquired heart diseases are frequently encountered in general practice. The management of heart-related conditions can often be complex, leading to apprehension for junior doctors during their rotations in this field.

The Oxford Specialist Handbook of Paediatric Cardiology aims to address this challenge and provides essential insights into the diagnosis, management, and care of young patients with heart conditions.

This comprehensive guide to paediatric cardiology takes a systematic approach to heart lesions which will form a major part of the book, offering quick two-page refreshers for clinicians. It covers common heart surgeries, diagnostic frameworks, major investigations, and subspecialties like interventional cardiology, fetal cardiology, and more. It also addresses drug therapy, emergencies, psychology, and palliative care.

This book includes everything that a junior doctor needs when starting in the speciality and will also be a valuable reference guide for more senior trainees and consultants.

Dr Thomas Day is a Clinical Research Fellow at the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences, at King's College London, UK. He is also an Honorary Consultant Paediatric and Fetal Cardiologist, and undertakes clinical work at The Evelina London Children's Hospital, part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. His research interest is the use of artificial intelligence to improve antenatal screening for congenital heart disease. Dr Aaron Bell qualified in 1993 from the University of Otago Medical School in Dunedin in New Zealand. He trained in children's heart services at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow, then in the Division of Imaging Sciences at King's College London and Evelina London Childrens's Hospital. He is currently a Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist at the Evelina London Childrens Hospital, part of Guy's and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Sadia Quyam is a Consultant in Paediatric Cardiology and Pulmonary Hypertension at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. Professor John Simpson studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He then trained in children's and fetal cardiology at Guy's Hospital, London and at the University of California, San Fransisco, USA. He has been a consultant at Evelina London Children's Hospital since 1999 and leads the echocardiography service as Professor of Paediatric and Fetal Cardiology.
