This volume was complied from selected papers presented at the 5th World Congress of the ISDE, held in Kyoto, Japan in 1992. It incorporates the most advanced reports in the world on the epidemiology, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the esophagus, from benign to malignant. In recent years, remarkable progress has been made in the early detection and treatment of esophageal cancer. Reports on endoscopic treatment methods and their results are included in this book. The discussion on the significance of the three-field dissection of cervical, thoracic and abdominal regions for lymph node dissection in the surgical treatment of cancer also receives attention. Furthermore, the text introduces new methods for gastroesophageal reflux diagnosis and treatment.
