The 3-volume APA Handbook of Health Psychology describes in detail the basic foundations and context of health psychology, major issues in health psychology relating to public health and disease prevention, and major clinical approaches to health psychology.
Volume 1, Foundations and Context of Health Psychology explores the conceptual foundations and current context of the field, as well as methods and the biological, psychological, behavioral, social, and cultural bases of health psychology, such as stress physiology, genetic approaches, sleep, and relationships.
Volume 2, Clinical Interventions and Disease Management in Health Psychology details the conceptual foundations and methodological considerations of intervention research with medical conditions in health psychology, as well as the efficacy and mechanisms of health psychology interventions in specific medical conditions, and intervention effectiveness and dissemination in real-world settings.
Volume 3, Health Psychology and Public Health examines the foundations of health psychology and public health, including different targets and settings for intervention as well as preventive interventions and emerging issues in public health.
The chapters serve as an essential resource for psychologists, practitioners, students, and professionals in many fields to get an understanding of the field of health psychology.
Neil Schneiderman, PhD, was the James L. Knight Professor of Psychology, Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Public Health Sciences, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami. He also directed the University of Miami Behavioral Medicine Research Center; the Department of Psychology’s Division of Health Psychology; and an NIH NHLBI institutional (T32) training grant (1979-2024). Dr. Schneiderman published more than 450 journal articles and 18 books and monographs, and served as editor-in-chief of Health Psychology and the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine. He was funded as the principal investigator of NIH and National Science Foundation research grants for over 5 decades.
