Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is one promising novel medication that is currently being reviewed consistently because of its ability to treat various cancers and autoimmune diseases.
Naltrexone has been around since the 1980s. It was originally used to treat cases of opioid (oxycodone), heroin, and alcohol dependence-typically prescribed in high doses of at least 50 mg. per day. Naltrexone blocks the effects of the addictive drugs, making these opioids lose their appeal to the users.
This eventually led experts to look into its effects when used in lower dosages, thus the development of low-dose naltrexone. Typically, LDN prescribed is only at around 0.5 to 4.5 mg., and some even up to 10 mg.
Dr. Ian Zagon and Dr. Patricia McLachlan began to explore the advantages of LDN back in the 1980s. The idea was first put into clinical practice by Dr. Bernard Bihari. Initially, his patients were using Naltrexone for their opioid addiction, following the typical 50 mg dosage and then slowly decreasing it.
Knowing the effects of naltrexone on his patients' immune systems, he directed his research into learning how the drug could also benefit HIV patients. They began to prescribe LDN to patients and this singular step paved the way for the discovery that LDN can produce promising results without the usual side effects of the higher dosage of naltrexone.
More and more research studies were done, following the promising clinical practice of Dr. Bihari. Because of this discovery, theories evolved claiming that Naltrexone at low doses can be used not only for cases of addiction but also for managing inflammation, boosting immunity, and increasing endorphins in the body.
This is why, even with the lack of research, LDN is being used as an off-label treatment for other conditions that are anti-inflammatory. Since more and more practitioners want to know more about its potential, it has yielded more than half a million Google search results back in 2018.
