OPAL is an interactive computer system which aims to bring hypermedia principles to teaching and learning. This module contains information on: calcium ions as messengers; differences in the distribution of two calcium binding proteins in the cerebellum; and the metabolism of calcium.
OPAL is an interactive system using computer technology and hypermedia principles to bring a revolutionary approach to learning and teaching. Information topics in cell-to-cell signalling spanning different disciplines is presented. There are no sequential and rigid patterns. Each user can browse freely and create his/her own knowledge trail. OPAL modules provide intuitive and easily remembered learning; use mouse activated icons and windows with senitive zones to access much more in-depth information, illustrations or text, establishing a personal path through the subjects according to interest; allow animations and experimental simulations in which the user can play an active role; include tests which give a detailed score of your knowledge and automatically prepare a revision programme. In the teacher version, lessons of any desired sequence can be made which can be projected on a large screen. The Question Maker allows the teacher to make up questions for knowledge evaluation and many more easy-to-use features.

Calcium ions as messengers. Mechanisms involved in the action of Ca2+ as a messenger in an idealized cell. How voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels function. Calcium ionophores. Voltage-dependent Ca2+ channel antagonists. Phospholipase C and inositol-tri-phosphate (IP3) pathway. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum of certain cells stores C2+. The calciosomes are intracellular membrane bound Ca2+ storage vesicles. Calcium binding proteins have pockets with high affinity for Ca2+. Differences in the distribution of two calcium binding proteins in the cerebellum. Calcium binding proteins translate the Ca2+ information in a meaningful message to the cell. Calcium-dependent ion channels. The calpains are a group of Ca2+ activated enzymes. Role of calcium ions in neurotransmitters secretion. The function of troponin-C in muscle contraction. Calcium pumps extrude Ca2+ from the cytoplasm, thus terminating its action. Unregulated evaluation of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration is toxic to cells. Metabolism of calcium. Parathyroid hormone and Calcitonin. Vitamin D3. Bone. Measurement of Ca2+ concentration. Calcium-sensitive electrodes.
