Art therapists work with diverse people experiencing life-changing distress that cannot be expressed verbally. From its early beginnings in the UK and USA, art therapy is now attracting international interest and recognition. To meet ever-changing needs in uncertain times, art therapists worldwide are currently advancing socially just and culturally relevant practice and research. This book presents original contributions, highlighting innovative research and culturally diverse practices that are transforming art therapy with new insights and knowledge. It captures an internationally vibrant and truly client-centred profession, and will be of interest to arts therapists, artists in healthcare, psychotherapists, counsellors, and professionals who use art therapeutically in their practice.

Val Huet, PhD, qualified as an Art Therapist in 1986 and is the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) Director of Research. She is a qualified group psychotherapist and organisation consultant. She worked for many years in mental health within the National Health Service with adults, children, and adolescents. Her practice now focuses on working with professionals using art therapy for work-related stress, having completed a PhD on this topic in 2015. In 2000, she co-founded the Art Therapy Practice Research Network (ATPRN) which helps art therapists to get involved in research.Lynn Kapitan, PhD, ATR-BC, HLM, is a Professor of Graduate Art Therapy at Mount Mary University, USA. She is a former executive editor of Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association and author of several articles, book chapters, and books, including the widely used Introduction to Art Therapy Research, a seminal text in the field. A past president of the American Art Therapy Association, she is a recipient of its highest award in recognition of over 35 years of continuous service to advance art therapy. She founded the first professional doctorate programme in art therapy in the USA, and, for the past 20 years, has served pro bono as a cross-cultural research consultant for non-governmental agencies in Latin America.
