This concise, accessible book covers anesthesia for hepatico-pancreatic-biliary (HPB) surgery and transplantation, based on randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, case series, reports, and hands-on experience. The anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and clinical consequences are discussed, and the close ties between HPB resection and transplant anesthesia are explored. The content reflects current real-world practice, as liver and pancreatic transplant surgeries have substantially improved in terms of blood-loss reduction, fast tracking and reduced risk. The book also addresses anesthetic aspects in connection with the recently introduced and rapidly expanding practice of laparoscopic surgery; with enhanced recovery; and with pancreatic surgery.

Anesthesia for Hepatico-Pancreatic-Biliary Surgery and Transplantation is intended for aspiring HPB and transplant anesthetists, anesthesia trainees, and consultants with experience in HPB anesthesia who want to see whether or not they're up to date on the current standards.

Dr Zoka Milan, MD, PhD, FRCA, MZI Dr Milan was born and trained in Serbia, where she worked at a university hospital and practiced major abdominal and cardiac anesthesia, research, teaching, examining, mentoring and management. Since moving to the UK 20 years ago, she has been involved in anesthesia for hepatico-pancreatic-biliary surgery and liver transplantation at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Leeds and more recently at King's College Hospital, London. As liver transplant programs in Leeds and King's College attract professionals from all over the world, and with her background working in developing and developed regions, sharing her experience and knowledge became an important part of Dr Milan's work. Additionally, she is involved in the EDIAC examination in European Society of Anesthesiology. Dr Milan has written one book: Cardiovascular Diseases and Liver Transplantation and translated another: Basic Physics and Measurement in Anaesthesia (from English into Serbian). She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Edorium Journal of Anesthesia and the Clinical Audit Journal. Dr Chula Goonasekara, MBBS, MD, PhD, MPhil, FRCP, MRCPCH, DCH, FCAI Dr Goonasekara is a senior clinical scientist with training in both anesthesia and pediatrics. With clinical, teaching and research experience spanning both developing (Sri Lanka) and developed (UK) countries, Dr Goonasekara's research and clinical interests include pediatric hypertension, end stage renal failure, critical illness, poisoning and sepsis. Dr Goonasekara is actively involved in the teaching of postgraduate doctors in anesthesia, critical care and emergency medicine, in addition to nurses and allied health workers. Since being recruited as a consultant anesthetist by King's College Hospital in 2012, Dr Goonasekara's focus has shifted to brain mapping techniques during neurosurgery.

"The editors and publishers have aimed this book at a wider audience than just those specializing in liver transplant and specialist hepatobiliary anesthesia. ... This book is at its best when recounting the authors' real-world practice, which feels up-to-date and evidence-based. Anesthesia for Hepatico-Pancreatic-Biliary Surgery and Transplantation will be a welcome addition to the shelves of the world's transplant centers, but it should also find a home on less lofty shelves." (Nicholas Weston and David W. Hewson, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Vol. 132 (6), June, 2021)

"This book makes an excellent read not only for the budding hepato-pancreato-biliary anaesthetists amongst us, but also as a worthy aide memoire for those experienced in HPB anaesthesia who want to see whether they are up to date with the current standards." (Ned Gilbert-Kawai, EJA European Journal of Anaesthesiology, Vol. 38 (5), 2021)
