Since the genome of hepatitis C virus (HCV) was identified in 1989, much has been learned about the structure of this virus and the development of test systems. The worldwide prevalence rate and modes of transmission of HCV infection are now far better known. A substantial number of patients with acute or chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, cryptogenic liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma can now be classified as having HCV-related infection. At present only a minority of chronic HCV patients can benefit from antiviral therapy. However, our knowledge about the variability of HCV and the detection of virus-specific RNA will improve the selection of patients for antiviral therapy. The screening of all blood donations since 1990/1991 has dramatically decreased the incidence of HCV infection in transfused patients. This volume provides virologists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists and specialists in transfusion medicine with a valuable overview of what is now known about HCV from both a basic and clinical perspective.
