Evidence-Based Bunion Surgery
Springer International Publishing (Verlag)
978-3-319-86833-2 (ISBN)
This unique book provides a critical examination of the current traditions and techniques commonly taught regarding hallux valgus correction and contrasts them with new, evidence-based anatomic and surgical concepts that change the entire approach to bunion surgery. Beginning with the history, etiology and epidemiology of the deformity, its clinical implications and physical and radiological assessment are then discussed. An overview of surgical correction strategies is then presented, followed by detailed chapters on the techniques themselves, covering rationale for the approach, anatomic and technical considerations, post-operative management and evidence-based outcomes. Surgical techniques include phalangeal, cresentic and distal metatarsal osteotomies, the scarf and rotational scarf procedure, joint arthrodesis and arthroplasty, among others.
The evaluation and management of the hallux valgus deformity has changed very little over the past several decades despite much discussion, debate, research and new technology. Now, utilizing the most up-to-date evidence and presenting multiple treatment strategies, Evidence-Based Bunion Surgery will be the new standard for the management of hallux valgus for podiatric and orthopedic surgeons, residents and fellows.

"The purpose is to provide a critical appraisal of our understanding of hallux valgus surgery to date, using a wealth of supporting data. ... of value to any foot and ankle surgeon, resident, or student, and they will be its primary market. ... The quality of the photographs and other illustrations is good. Tables are used fairly extensively to summarize some of the evidence-based literature surrounding a particular topic, and for the most part these are easy to follow." (Martin C. Yorath, Doody's Book Reviews, November, 2017)
