The Bircher-Benner diet has tremendous healing value.
This is why doctors, nutritionists and dieticians use our Bircher-Benner diet books.

Editorial reviews:
Prof. Dr.med. Halden, Graz, M.D.:
“I think the books are excellent. In addition to many spa plans, recipes and meal plans for a helpful and tasty diet, tried-and-tested instructions for a protective and uplifting lifestyle are also provided, which promote the understanding of the medical prescriptions.

Dr. med. Klimcyk , M.D. in the German Medical Journal:
"It saves a lot of time for the doctor and is very helpful to the patient."

Prof. Dr.med. K. Kötschau, Schlossberg, M.D. near Rosenheim:
“These books rank above all medicine, because they give you the chance to prevent almost every illness, and indeed some illnesses. That is my medical conviction, which I have come across in decades of working in preventive health care."

Dr. med. W.Matzke, M.D. in the Austrian Medical Journal:
“Everything is thought of and everything is well thought out. This is the special value of this diet book series. Every doctor should recommend it to their patients. "

Dr. med. J. V. Mengershausen, Bayrischzell, M.D.:
“Max Bircher-Benner was the leading pioneer of this natural diet and lifestyle. The series of Bircher-Benner Manuals for the most important disease groups has emerged from the wide and long-standing experience of his famous clinic, which can be highly recommended to anyone seeking healing. ”

Prof. Dr. med. Mommsen, Frankfurt / M ., M.D.:
“These books are a valuable aid for every doctor in the management of their patients. They show the sick and the person at risk of illness how they can regain health and resistance through proper nutrition. The reader will be amazed to see how varied a diet can be. It is not necessary to give up the joys of good meals. I wish the books the broadest distribution and I am convinced that our hospitals' susceptibility to illness and the resulting high occupancy rates could be significantly reduced if the nutritional advice of the Bircher-Benner diet books were followed by the majority of our population.”

Dr. med. Schoeler, M.D. in the general Homeopathic newspaper:
"It is most convenient for doctors and patients and the most reliable for success to use these inexpensive and practical diet books."

Prof. Dr..med. H. Warning, Saarbrücken, M.D.:
“Since the existence of this diet book series, many related authors have been trying to bring something equivalent and comprehensive to the diet book market that is equally practical for the dietetically informed professional and the general public. As far as I can see, this has so far been only partially successful. So the Bircher-Benner diet book series is marching at the top of its genre as before. ”
Dr. med. J. Zinke, M.D. "Classic Homeopathy":
“The diet books of the Bircher-Benner probably represent the best that is currently on the market in this genre. They save a lot of time for the attending doctor and are extremely valuable help for the patient. ”

Preface All neurodegenerative diseases cause horrendous suffering for the patients. Congenital forms are very rare. The most common diseases are multiple sclerosis , Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis follows a particularly tragic course and is diagnosed with increasing frequency. There is no consensus as to the cause, but it is impossible not to link the steady increase of these diseases in all Western countries – whose typical nutrition features large quantities of animal protein and fat, white flour, sugar, coffee and alcohol – with sedentary lifestyles and insufficient sleep b efore midnight. Neurodegenerative diseases usually progress slowly, with degenerative inflammatory processes in various parts of the nervous system. The search for a pathogen (e. g. a virus) causing multiple sclerosis was long conducted in vain, until we understood that viral infections are not directly involved in the disease, but only act as a trigger by weakening the immune system. In the last thirty years, many scientific works have uncovered an increasing number of partial causes of multiple sclerosis , such as excessive weight, lack of exercise, animal-based nutrition including a large quantity of meat and fatty cheese, lack of polyunsaturated vegetable oils , vitamin D deficiency, oxidative stress , stress from environmental toxins , the effects of industrially synthesised nutrition and an unnatural lifestyle . The focus of scientific medical thinking is on the autoimmune processes, i. e. the destructive attacks of the immune system on the structures of the body’s nervous system, the nerve cells and the sensitive myelin -containing nerve sheaths. This explains why all therapeutic efforts to combat multiple sclerosis are focused on medication designed to suppress pathogenic autoimmune inflammation . In some cases, this treatment can briefly delay the bouts of illness, but it can also have dangerous side effects. Immune suppression does not target the cause of the disease. The disease progresses continually in spite of an immense effort with pharmacological medication. Only recently have the significant geographical, epidemiological differences in the frequency of multiple sclerosis been taken seriously. Attempts have been made to comprehend this, leading to the understanding that differences in nutrition and lifestyle , rather than genetics, are the cause. All of these data and scientific studies suggest strongly that the poor nutrition common in Western industrialised countries is the cause. Lymph cells are formed in the bone marrow. They then migrate into the mucosa of the intestine, which is permeated with dense lymph cell nests, like a leopard’s skin. Our intestinal milieu is complex. The closest continuous contact between the body’s substances and external substances takes place there. In the lymph cell nests of the intestinal mucosa , immune cells (i. e. dentric cells ) are continually “trained” to differentiate between the body’s own substances and external substances, both beneficial and harmful, and to recognise pathogens. Only 10 % of the lymphocytes pass this test and will migrate into the lymph nodes and all tissues of the body as immuno-competent cells. A healthy intestinal mucosa is covered by a dense layer of mucous . This is infused with IgA-antibodies . The IgA-antibodies form a catalogue of what is compatible, according to prior experience, and thus not to be fought with an immune response. Autoimmune diseases, such as the autoimmune inflammation in multiple sclerosis, result when the intestinal milieu is impaired because of a degenerated intestinal flora that attacks the intestinal mucosa with putrefactive toxins . The result is that the mucous layer and ist antibody catalogue are deficient. This causes the mucosa barrier – which separates the intestinal content from the inside of the body – to leak, and the immune system of the intestine will begin to react to a number of different foods. In multiple sclerosis, there is usually a large number of IgG4 - and IgE -mediated food incompatibilities. Eating such foods damages the intestinal mucosa still more. An unhealthy intestinal milieu prevents the correct transformation of the cells of an enteral immune system into immunocompetent cells. The ability to distinguish between external and internal substances becomes imperfect, so that the immune system increasingly attacks body tissue and tends to produce autoimmune inflammations. Many scientific studies indicate the importance of nutrition-related metabolic toxins and deficiencies that damage the myelin sheaths of the nerve cells and pathways. Other scientific works point out clear interrelations between multiple sclerosis and the effects of certain environmental toxins and heavy metals . Additionally, there is new damage to the central nervous system from today’s all-pervasive stress on people, coming from pulsed high-frequency radiation from mobile phones , wireless house phones, WLAN and other wireless connections. The highly significant relevance of such harmful exposure to the human brain has been documented, even though it can be expected that this will only be accepted over time because of the powerful personal and outside interests of most politicians. This book presents a comprehensive therapy that targets the causes of multiple sclerosis , Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, to the extent to which these are known today. The causes and prevention of the various forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are treated in Bircher-Benner manual no. 24. This book is based on all the modern scientific insights that are relevant for the understanding, prevention and effective causative treatment of neurodegenerative diseases . Additionally, it must be added that multiple sclerosis has already been treated for more than a hundred years. Our greatest teachers are the many patients who have been successfully treated at the famous Bircher-Benner Klinik in Zürich and at our medical centre over the years with our vital vegan fresh food diet, new life order and the careful elimination of toxin stress , foci of diseases and interference fields. This book provides the patient and his family with practical instructions for successfully treating and arresting multiple sclerosis and for preventing Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or for positively influencing their courses once they have already developed. For the treating physician, this book is a great help for the instruction and guidance of his patients.

IntroductionTo understand the causes of multiplesclerosis and other neurodegenerativediseases , to the extent to which that theyare known today, it is important to havesome basic knowledge regarding the constructionand function of the central nervoussystem. In fact, multiple sclerosis mayattack and damage the central nervoussystem anywhere. Therefore its forms arevery diverse. Parkinson's disease has amuch more consistent course, since it isalways caused by an attack on and degenerationof the nucleus niger , a pigmentedcore in the corpus striatum , one of thebasal ganglia of the brain. Amyotrophiclateral sclerosis also follows a typicalcourse, since it almost exclusively affectsthe motoric nerve pathways that are responsiblefor muscle strength and actionand therefore causes increasing paralysis .The explanations concerning some of theanatomical and functional situations inthe central nervous system help to revealthe causes of these diseases and enableevery patient to actively contribute inpreventing and healing multiple sclerosis .This is a very rewarding undertaking.
