The study of the biology, chemistry and physics of the ocean is critical to our understanding of the current biosphere and how it may evolve with future climate change. This unique textbook offers a comprehensive scope of the major components of marine chemistry. The purpose is to review important concepts of pure chemistry that are most relevant to marine chemistry and then apply them to specific marine topics. The book will not be just a descriptive state of the science, but, by spanning topics such as the formation of the oceans, the role oceans play in regulating our climate’s chemistry, it will demonstrate the ocean’s dominant influence over the biosphere.
Professor Penny Vlahos trained as an undergraduate in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto and did her masters in Environmental Engineering also at the University of Toronto . She completed her doctoral studies in Oceanography at the University of Massachusetts Environmental Coastal and Ocean Sciences program (ECOS) before coming to the University of Connecticut where she has been ever since. She is a member of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences (CAAS), the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO), the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and the International Panel on Chemical Pollutants (IPCC).
