This book describes an up-to-date practical strategy for the use of endoscopy in the evaluation and management of pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). All aspects of the role of endoscopy in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) - the two most common types of IBD - are addressed. Readers will find detailed information on its use in the initial diagnosis of IBD, differentiation between CD and UC, assessment of disease extent and activity, monitoring of response to therapy, and surveillance for cancer and dysplasia. Attention is drawn to specific clinical and endoscopic features of CD and UC in the pediatric age group that serve to illustrate why the child is not to be regarded merely as a small adult. Helpful information is also supplied on equipment, patient and parent preparation, and sedation. Endoscopy is considered the best means of obtaining a definite diagnosis in children who may have IBD, and this book will be of value to practitioners at all levels of experience.

Since 2000 he has been Chief of the Digestive Endoscopy and Surgery Unit at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome, where pediatric gastroenterologists and surgeons work closely together to provide optimal care for children and young adults with digestive diseases. Dr. Dall'Oglio has extensive surgical experience with open and laparoscopic techniques for the most important pediatric indications. He was the first person to organize a pediatric digestive endoscopy procedure in Italy, in 1978, and he subsequently introduced important improvements, including the patented dynamic stent for the treatment of esophageal strictures. Dr. Dall'Oglio has contributed to national and international guidelines in different fields, including the European ESGE-ESPGHAN guidelines for pediatric endoscopy. He is the author of more than 300 publications, including 68 in indexed journals, as well as 24 book chapters. Claudio Romano, MD, works at the University of Messina, Italy, where he is Chief of the Pediatric Digestive and Endoscopy Unit and Executive Physician in the Division of Pediatric Genetics and Clinical Immunology. He is also Chief of the Regional Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit. Dr. Romano graduated from Messina University in 1989 and subsequently completed his specialization in Pediatrics with first class honors. He is a member of various medical societies, including the Italian Pediatric Society and the American Society of Digestive Endoscopy, and has twice served as Vice President of the Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology (2007-10, 2013-6). He is also a member of the ESPGHAN Working Group on Endoscopy. In recent years he has been Visiting Professor at Emory University, Atlanta, USA (2012-3) and has attended the IBD Unit at Necker Hospital, Paris, France (2014). Dr. Romano is the author of more than 120 papers and abstracts in Italian and international journals on IBD, gastrointestinal reflux disease, abdominal pain, pediatric endoscopy, and celiac disease.
