Gives guidance on the use of intravenous drug infusions during the perioperative period. Reviews general principles of drug infusion, describes intravenous drug delivery systems and types of drug infusion used for general anaesthesia, pain control and manipulation of the cardiovascular systems.
This volume offers practical guidance on the use of intravenous drug infusions during the perioperative period. After reviewing the general principles of drug infusion, the book describes the intravenous drug delivery systems and the various types of drug infusions used for general anaesthesia, pain control and pharmacologic manipulation of the cardiovascular system. Chapters cover intravenous anaesthetic infusions, opiate infusions, muscle relaxant infusions, total intravenous anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia. Of special note is a detailed description of the pharmacokinetics of vasoactive drugs administered by intravenous infusion, including the potent sedative-hypnotic drugs propofol, midazolam, etomidate, methohexital and thiopental and the dissociative drug, ketamine. Included is pharmacokinetic data on fentanyl, alfentanil, sufentanil, meperidine and other opiates. There are also guidelines for the administration of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) by continuous infusion, as well as specific techniques for administering total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA).
