Although mucositis is a transient complication, it can have a deep impact on the patient, bringing pain and difficulties in drinking, eating and swallowing, which can limit food intake. Other related complications are sleeping problems, speaking difficulties and deterioration of the well-being of the patient. The aim of the text is to evaluate new modalities in the prevention and treatment of irradiation mucositis to ensure the best possible result.

Scoring irradiation mucositis of the oral cavity; assessment of reduced oral defences; effect of chlorhexidine mouth rinses and mucositis; inactivation of chlorhexidine by salvia; effect of selective oral flora elimination on mucositis; inactivation of polymyxin E and tobramycin by salvia; general discussion and clinical relevance; management of oral complications in irradiated head and neck cancer patients.
