Pain is the distressing experience that tells people that they are not well. Pain is also the price that is paid for treatment. Health Care professionals are taught that "pain is what the patient says it is", as it is felt, fought, resisted and managed uniquely. It is not easy to imagine or remember pain. The first edition of this book has become the classic work on the subject. This second edition also includes an examination of the physical, spiritual and cultural factors that influence the perception of pain. There is a new section on pain assessment and management.
Part 1 A patient's experience. Part 2 Towards understanding pain: meeting the challenge of pain control; defining pain; types of pain; the gate control theory of pain; acute and chronic pain; some problems faced by nurses in managing pain. Part 3 The uniqueness of the individual: psychological factors; the effect of learning on pain; cultural factors; some suggestions for the psychological support of patients in pain. Part 4 The unique position of the nurse: nurses' own beliefs and values; personal judgements; incongruence of beliefs and values within the caring team; responses to and expectations of patients' behaviour; learning about pain relief. Part 5 Accountability, responsibility and communication. Part 6 Assessing pain: recognition of pain cues; difficulties of assessing pain; individualized assessment of pain; patients' views; prerequisites for nurses assessing pain. Part 7 Pain therapies: distraction; imagery; relaxation techniques; analgesics; transcutaneous electric nerve simulation (TENS); acupuncture analgesia; nerve blocks.
