Old age psychiatry has become established as a specialty in Europe, North America, and elsewhere. "Psychiatry in the elderly" covers all aspects of old age psychiatry. It is written from a multidisciplinary standpoint by 43 contributors. Their remit was to combine reviews of the scientific state of the subject with hands-on practical advice and instruction on clinical diagnosis and management. The resulting book brings together for the first time sections on basic sciences (epidemiology, psychology, sociology and pathology), the principles of clinical practice, and straightforward accounts of the specific conditions met by old age psychiatrists. The care of the elderly has ceased to focus exclusively on custodial management and has moved towards active intervention in all types of case with consequent improvement in prognosis and quality of life. "Psychiatry in the elderly" is designed particularly for trainees in psychiatry and geriatrics, but it is comprehensive enough to be of value to specialist physicians and to other disciplines, such as nurses, social workers, clinical psychologists and occupational therapists who may use it for systematic study and for reference.
