Written by more than 40 experts in neurology, neurosurgery, internal medicine, paediatrics, infectious diseases, epidemiology, virology, and the basic neurosciences, this book provides coverage of all aspects of CNS infections, ranging from molecular pathogenesis to diagnosis, therapy, and prevention. Ten major sections of the book cover all viral, bacterial, fungal, and protozoal infections of the CNS, as well as infections caused by rarer pathogens such as mycoplasmas, slow viruses, and helminths. A syndrome-oriented approach is emphasized, but specific diseases such as HIV infections, tetanus, neurosyphilis, and Lyme disease receive separate coverage. The contributors provide information on the history, epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis and pathophysiology, pathology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of each syndrome or disease. Concluding chapters provide state-of-the-art coverage of two major diagnostic modalities - evaluation of the cerebrospinal fluid and neurodiagnostic imaging by computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
Tables, drawings and photographs complement and clarify the text, and a bibliography lists both classic papers and recent (1985-1990) references.
