The advances made in immunology during the last few years have enabled the medical profession to put together most of the jigsaw-puzzle representing the response of the body to the allogeneic "passenger" leucocytes present in transfused blood. Many different strategies, including filtration of the blood and platelet concentrates, have been developed to reduce the numbers of leucocytes tranfused and to avoid, or at least ameliorate, their undesirable effects. This book is the published proceedings of the International Workshop on the Role of Leucocyte Depletion in Blood tranfusion practice held recently in London.
The role of leucocyte depletion in blood tranfusion practice - an introduction; leucocyte-depleted blood components prevent primary HLA-immunization in the majority of patients receiving multiple blood tranfusions; prevention of non-Haemolytic tranfusion reactions by a simple, effective and economcial procedure; Platelet tranfusion - the problem of refactoriness; leucocyte-depleted blood products and their clinical usefulness; advanced methods for leucocyte removal by blood filtration; blood centre implications of leucocyte depletion by filtration; tranfusion of leucocyte-depleted blood by bedside filtration - use of a sterile-connecting device to prepare leucocyte-poor filtered red cells in a closed system; improvement of the leucocyte depletion by routine production of buffycoat-poor red cells using a standardized procedure; filtration of blood from donors with HbAS - an unexpected problem; leucocyte-depleted red cell suspensions.
