The aim of this book is to condense into one source a variety of aspects relating to pulp function, to enable basic science investigators and clinicians obtain a view of the latest progress and current concepts in pulp biology. The first part of the book pertains to development, discussing differentiation of dental papilla cells and innervation of the teeth. This is followed by a consideration of the morphological aspects of the pulp, such as the odontoblasts, their processes and the vascular systems. It also links the microcirculatory and sensory systems. It includes a discussion of the biochemical aspects of pulp function which is concerned with enzymes important in synthetic activities, stressing their significance in the health and disease process of the pulp. In addition there is an examination of the neuroregulators, both classical neurotransmitters and neuropeptides, and the subject of bioactive substances in the dental pulp. Finally, consideration is given to the dynamics of pulp pathology and the use of medicaments.
