This book covers all the aspects of child health nursing included into the curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students according to the Indian Nursing Council.
The intent of the Textbook of Child Health Nursing is to provide the nurse with the basis needed for sound nursing care of children. The main objective is to aid the students in building a strong knowledge base as well as to assist with the development of the critical thinking skills. The book covers a broad scope of topics, placing emphasis on common issues and pediatric-specific content. The textbook presents the important differences when caring for children as compared to caring for adults, rather than repeating medical-surgical content that the student has already mastered, the text builds upon knowledge base. A nursing process approach provides relevant information in a concise and non-redundant manner. In the Section 3: Health Deviations overview of nursing process is given for each system and nursing management is given for specific disorders.
It covers important areas of pediatric nursing such as genetics, prenatal pediatrics, behavioral pediatrics, adolescent issues and preventive pediatrics. The most important aspect of current nursing care, the nursing process is given due importance. Pharmaceutical management is also included with the indications and nursing management. Laboratory and diagnostic procedures are given with explanation and nursing implications.
The practical aspect of pediatrics is specified with details about the care of newborn child, care of high-risk infant and care of hospitalized child in intensive care units. The programs undertaken by government for child welfare are explained. Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI) process of child care is also explained with clarity.
This book is a useful contribution to literatures on child health nursing. It is hoped that the book will simplify the efforts of those who teach and will also serve as a resource for students in providing valuable information in the field of child health nursing.
