This book provides the ophthalmologist with the most recently available data on the macular dystrophies, a group of many different inherited or sporadic eye conditions linked by a problem with photoreceptors or other structures of the central retina. Internationally recognized experts in the field present the latest evidence and discuss their own personal experiences with regard to each of the principal dystrophies as well as some very rare entities. Topics covered include molecular biology, state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques, and the newest treatment options, including still experimental therapies. Attention is also devoted to a range of issues that continue to be debated. The editors have taken care to ensure that chapters are of a uniformly high standard while not sacrificing the originality of the individual authors. Macular Dystrophies will fully acquaint the reader with both the latest research findings and the current and emerging approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Querques has contributed to more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and his current main area of both clinical and laboratory research is the diagnosis (imaging) and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, and hereditary retinal diseases. Eric Souied, MD, PhD, is Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Hôpital Intercommunal de Créteil, and Head of the Ophthalmology Department, Hôpital Henri Mondor, in France. He gained his MD from University of Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC) before completing his ophthalmology residency with Prof. Gabriel Coscas. Dr. Souied was appointed Professor in Ophthalmology at Créteil University Eye Clinic in 2006. His main areas of interest are medical retina [age-related macular degeneration (AMD), inherited macular and retinal dystrophies] and ophthalmic surgery (retina and cataract). Dr. Souied has contributed to more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in the areas of AMD, hereditary retinal diseases, ophthalmic genetics, and gene therapy of retinal dystrophies. He has been the recipient of a number of prizes and is a member of the Macula Society, the Gonin Club, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
