This text provides a behind-the-scenes look at the sequencing of the human genome project and the birth of the science of genomics. It explains genomics as an information science and traces its history back further than standard histories and news accounts to the early visionaries.
This text provides a behind-the-scenes look at the sequencing of the human genome project and the birth of the science of genomics. It explains genomics as an information science and traces its history back further than standard histories and news accounts to the early visionaries who saw the gene as as information carrier. It covers the early protein work of leigh Anderson and John taylor to the entreprenerial ideas of protein chemist Randall Scott and his vision of mining the database of gene sequences for pharmaceutical riches. The book also looks at the developments that have come out of the human genome project and the birth of genomics, and how they will be influencing the world of science for years to come.

Gary Zweiger received his PhD. in genetics from Stanford University. Having already done research at the start-up company, DNAX Inc. in Palo Alto, CA, he joined Genetech inc. (a company that helped launch the biotechnology industry) in 1994 as a post-doctoral fellow. He also worked as a consultant for venture capitalists, investment bankers, and other early backers of emerging genomics industry, and taught classes in human biology and biotechnology at several small colleges. In 1996, he joined Incyte Pharmaceuticals Inc. (an initiator of the genomics industry and a leading gene sequencing outfit), where as a Technical Advisor he discovered several novel genes and wrote dozens of gene patents. Later, as a Scientist and Senior Scientist at Incyte, studied thousands of genes using enormous databases of biological information and powerful computational tools. His research has focused on the molecular changes that accompany prostate, breast, colon, and pediatric cancers; and he has designed microarrays ("gene chips") and applied them in his research. He recently left his position as Senior Strategic Advisor at Incyte, to join a new Packard company, Agilent.
