Teratogenic exposures during embryonic or foetal life can produce permanent abnormalities but are potentially preventable. This edition expands the clinically orientated information now available on the potential teratogenic effects of drugs and other agents on the developing embryo and foetus.
Teratogenic exposures during embryonic or foetal life can produce permanent abnormalities of structure or function. Although the number of individuals affected is relatively small - perhaps accounting for about one-tenth of all birth defects - teratogenic exposures are nevertheless important because they are potentially preventable. In this volume J.M. Friedman, MD, PhD, and Janine E. Polifka, PhD, present an updated version of their catalogue for clinicians. With more than 1100 agent summaries, this new edition expands the clinically orientated information now available on the potential teratogenic effects of drugs and other agents on the developing foetus or embryo. The catalogue offers a rating system by which an internationally recognized panel of teratologists assesses the risk associated with usual exposures to each agent. Also rated are the quality and quantity of data upon which the panel's assessment is based. Each entry includes a concise narrative summary that reviews the available information as well as a list of key references.
