This book provides the reader with an up-to-date, practical and succinct overview of basic neuropathology. It does not replace large reference textbooks in neuropathology but emphasizes key concepts and basic principles including recent advances, genetics and classification, and discusses important aspects of specific neuropathological disorders. It also gives practical hints on aspects of neuropathology, including how to best use the neuropathology service and interpret the results of pathological tests. The reader will gain a sufficiently broad basic knowledge of neuropathology which will be of use in their future clinical careers.

Neuropathology Simplified is aimed at trainees and residents in neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry around the world. It may also be of use to basic scientists involved in neuroscience research and also to general histopathology trainees and residents.

David Hilton is an experienced diagnostic neuropathologist working in one of the UK’s largest hospitals in Plymouth and is a fellow of both the UK Royal College of Pathologists and Physicians. His practice covers all areas of adult neuropathology, including neurosurgical pathology, autopsy work, and neuromuscular disease (including the undertaking of muscle and nerve biopsies on patients). In addition he is actively involved in research, including aspects of neurodegenerative disease and tumour biology, and has published over 85 peer reviewed research articles and written several book chapters, covering many aspects of neuropathology.Selected publications:Schwannomas and their pathogenesis. After completing post-graduation (MD, taught) in Pathology from Mumbai University (2001) he worked briefly as a Senior Registrar in the Department of Neuropathology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, India, before coming to the UK to undertake specialist Neuropathology training in Leeds. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2008. His areas of interest include CNS tumours, neuromuscular disorders and ophthalmic pathology. He is actively involved in teaching neuropathology to undergraduate and postgraduate students and serves as an academic tutor at the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD).Selected publications:Loss of SOX10 function contributes to the phenotype of human Merlin-null schwannoma cells.
