Patients with rare diseases, affecting less than 1 in 2000 persons, frequently experience delays or errors in diagnosis, sometimes with tragic consequences. Even after the diagnosis has been established, the quality of health care delivered is often poor. This book, which is both textbook and atlas, covers the full range of rare congenital genitourinary anomalies encountered in males and females, many of which have previously been described only in sporadic case reports. In the case of the more established anomalies, variants are presented. For each anomaly, information is provided on incidence, similar cases, clinical presentation, diagnosis, possible management and outcome. Informative supporting illustrations are presented for each anomaly, and the book will serve as an excellent reference for all pediatricians, urologists and surgeons who are responsible for the care of such patients.

Mohamed Abdel Baky Fahmy, MD, FRCS, is Professor and Head of Pediatric Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine for Girls, Al Azher University, Cairo, Egypt. He is also a Consultant and Head of Pediatric Surgery at the Nasser Institute, Cairo. His previous posts include Head of the Pediatric Surgery Department at the King Fahed Tertiary Hospital, AL Baha, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Fahmy originally graduated from Al Azher University in 1982, where he obtained his Masters in General Surgery in 1987. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1992. His main interests include pediatric urology, rare genitourinary anomalies, neonatal surgery, and Hirschsprung's disease. Dr. Fahmy is Secretary General of the Egyptian Pediatric Surgical Association and is a member of the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons and the American Association of Academic Surgery. He is a member of the editorial board of Advances in Bioscience and Clinical Medicine and has published on a range of topics in pediatric urology and neonatal surgery in both national and international publications.

"It is an elaborate show and tell of pediatric genitourinary anomalies collected from the author's lifetime of work with children throughout Egypt. ... this is a well-done book primarily in the atlas category with great photographs and reasonable discussion of embryology. Serious surgeons will enjoy quick verification of the existence of a condition and some history and discussion of embryology." (Robert M. Arensman, Doody's Book Reviews, May, 2015)
