Professor Arthur S M Lim is the Clinical Professor and Head, Department of Ophthalmology, National University of Singapore; Medical Director, Singapore National Eye Centre; and Chief, Department of Ophthalmology, National University Hospital, Singapore. He is also Chairman of the committee of Ophthalmology, School of Postgraduate Medical Studies, National University of Singapore, as well as Chief Examiner of the Conjoint M Med (Ophthalmology)/FRCS (Edinburgh) Examination, conducted by the school. He is also External Examiner, Master of Surgery (Ophthalmology), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Professor Lim holds a host of international appointments. He is the Secretary-General of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the President of the XXVI International Congress of Ophthalmology. He is a recipient of the Jose Rizal Medal for excellence in ophthalmology in the Asia Pacific region, the highest award of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis; member of the International Council of ophthalmology; member of the International Ophthalmic Advisory Board, Lions Eye Institute, Perth, etc. He is the Visiting Professor to the Tianjin Medical University, the People's Republic of China, and was instrumental in the setting up of the International Intraocular Implant Centre (IIIC) in Tianjin in 1989. Since Tianjin was established, ten other such centres are slated to be developed throughout Asia. He is also the Visiting Professor to the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences and the Honorary Visiting Professor to the Beijing Medical University. In the field of Prevention of blindness, Professor Lim was the Vice-President of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness as well as the Regional Chairman of the IAPB-SEA. In 1982, he wrote World's Major Blinding Conditions and the second edition in 1990. He has been instrumental in conducting numerous courses to upgrade the standard of ophthalmology and thus alleviate the problem of blindness in this region. For the past 20 years, he has been conducting numerous microsurgery and implant courses throughout Asia as well. He put together the Training Programme of 10 Bangladeshi doctors held during the period from May-July 1979. To his credit, he has published 300 scientific papers, written ten books and sits on the editorial boards of 13 international journals and periodicals. He is also editor-in-chief of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology.
