A textbook which deals with anaesthetic care for spinal cord injuries and covers such topics as pathophysiology of acute spinal cord injury, emergency room care of patients with spinal cord injury, chronic care of spinal cord injury and moral and legal issues in its treatment.
What this book aims to do is to give information as to the problems patients with spinal cord injuries will present, and give guidance from specialists in the field as to the appropriate methods of treatment. While the expertise in the management of spinal cord injuries has been built up in specialized units, these patients may now present themselves either in the acute phase after the injury, or during the chronic rehabilitation phase, to any doctor in any hospital. Many spinal cord injury patients are young, with excellent survival prospects now available to them if correctly managed. It is important that they are given this optimal care. The authors hope this book goes some way to giving anaesthetists, wherever they may work, the ability to help achieve this goal.
