Good health depends on many factors including high quality air, water, soil and food. As environmental problems increase, related health issues are also becoming a source of major worldwide concern. It is therefore essential to establish effective measures to eliminate or considerably reduce hazardous factors from the environment, measures highly dependent on the application of suitable experimental, modelling and interpretive techniques to achieve a balanced assessment of the risks involved. Covering the latest developments in this field, this book features edited versions of papers presented at the First International Conference on the Impact of Environmental Factors on Health (Environmental Health Risk 2001). The volume provides an easily accessible source of information on the interrelation between environmental risk and health which is often complex and can involve a variety of social, occupational and lifestyle factors. It also emphasizes the need to adopt an interdisciplinary approach in order to effectively recognize and avoid such problems. The contributions are divided under the following headings: Air Pollution; Water Supply and Quality; Waste Water and Surface Water Problems; Radiation and Noise; Microbial Risk; Population Health; and Solid Waste.
Section 1 Air Pollution: Contributions of risk factors to high lead and cadmium levels in deciduous teeth; Evaluation of toxic air pollutants in an urban neighborhood adjacent to a municipal waste landfill; Assessment of external costs for electricity production in Slovenia based on the ExternE methodology; Health risk analysis for the role of dust and gaseous air pollution on bronchitis in children; Naturation of Mexico City: cost benefit analysis of an air quality improvement proposal; Mortality due to air pollution: how to interpret the results; Ground-level ozone and its potential impacts on human health in the Czech Republic; Dust exposure and respiratory health amongst children in the environmental disaster zone of Karakalpakstan, Central Asia: preliminary findings of the ASARD project; Design and evaluation of a breath analysis system for occupational exposure assessment. Section 2 Water supply and quality : The application of computational fluid dynamics to environmental health risk; Study on the rate of the nurolithias is in the Aral Sea Area and the quality of potable water; Health risks by radon in drinking and sanitary water: assessment and control techniques; Medico-ecological aspects of hydrochemistry of Uzbekistan; Environmental health risks by arsenic consumption in water wells in the Cape region, Mexico; Further studies on phenol removal from aqueous solutions by solvent extraction. Section 3 Waste water and surface water problems: Wastewater reuse by drip irrigation; An hydrochemical answer to a legislative demand involving health risk related to water quality; Application of a BioBarrie to a mixed MT BE/BTEX dissolved plume. Section 4 Radiation and Noise: The fungal spores elimination in drinking water by UV radiation; The concentration of radon in buildings in Central- Southern Italy: experimental campaigns and correlation modeling; Noise levels in Madrid: association with emergency hospital admissions. Section 5: Microbial Risk : Aspergillus surveillance project at an urban hospital; Statistical approach to food sampling. Section 6 Population health: Technical public representation for health risk assessments in a highly urbanized region; The environmental education and the risk literacy: an approach to a healthy and sustainable society; Slovenian approach in taking over the SEVESO II directive; Desertification and population health in the Turkmenistan part of the Aral Sea region. Section 7 Solid waste: Urban solid waste generation pattern and health in mid-21st century in Nigeria; Life cycle assessment approach for refuse derived fuel (RDF) systems for Tuscany; Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) as a remediation of EHR reduction.
