The 10 million alcohol-abusing adults, along with unborn children exposed to alcohol in utero, cost the people of the U.S. more than $100 billion in lost wages, health care, theft, damaged mental functions, and shortened life span. An intimate, detailed knowledge of the effects of alcohol on the biochemical reactions and neurological changes is critical in preventing or treating abuse. We must study the mechanisms of ethanol's effects on the neurological system at a cellular and systematic level to understand its action. These include modifications of hormonal regulation and production with its major functional consequences. Brain development including its cells are a major focus and emphasis of this volume. The progress of research over the past decade is encouraging as we begin to summarize and evaluate in detail advances in understanding changes in the brain's biochemistry and physiology caused by ethanol. This information will assist the researcher, clinician, and student in comprehending the complex changes caused by direct and indirect effects of single drugs at the cellular level.
Effects of Maternal Alcohol Consumption on the Developing Nervous System (Mary J. Druse). Ethanol, Hormones, and Sympathetic Nervous System Function in Traumatic Brain Injury (Paul D. Woolf). Intoxication and Acute Tolerance to Ethanol: Cerebellar Granule Cells (Chi-ming Huang and Rosa H. Huang). The Responses of Astrocytes to Ethanol Exposure (David L. Davies). Effects of Alcohol on the Development of Glial Cells and Myelin (Dwight E. Phillips). Fetal Alcohol Neuroendocrinopathies (P. Kevin Rudeen and Julia A. Taylor). Chronic Ethanol Effects on Developing Neonatal Skeletal Neuromuscular Junction In Vivo (Michiko Okamoto and Jose L. Walewski). Effects of Perinatal Ethanol Exposure on Hippocampal Formation (Daniel D. Savage and H. Scott Swartzwelder). Electrophysiological and Neurochemical Effects of Ethanol on Hippocampal CA3 Neurons (Larry P. Gonzalez and Rongkun Sun). Ethanol Effects on Cortical Circuits during Sensory and Motor Processing (John K. Chapin). Alterations in Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Function by Ethanol (Claire Waltman and Gary S. Wand). Effects of Ethanol on the Immunocytochemical Localization of IgG-, Albumin-, IL-4-, and CD4-Like Substances in the Rat Brain (Gerald P. Kozlowski and Ivan Sterzl). Alcohol-Nicotine Actions and Interactions: Studies in Humans and Animals (Christopher M. de Fiebre and Allan C. Collins). Ethanol and the Neurobiology of Temperature Regulation (Larry I. Crawshaw, Candace S. O'Connor, and Lonnie P. Wollmuth). Pharmacologic and Nonpharmacologic Influences in the Reinforcing Effects of Ethanol (Marjorie S. Moolten and Conan Kornetsky).
