The human health threat posed by exposure to ionizing radiation continues to present itself on many fronts. The most obvious, nuclear weapons proliferation, puts military personnel and civilians at risk not only during conflicts but also as a result of weapons production and storage. In addition, the peaceful applications of radioactive materials continue to expand in the fields of energy production, medical diagnosis and treatment, and scientific and medical research. This volume reflects the findings concerning the complex nature of radiation injuries and of potential prevention, assessment, and treatment strategies from the April 1993 Second Consensus Development Conference on the Treatment of Radiation Injuries. Leading researchers in 18 countries report their findings in 38 papers.

Section headings and papers: Hematopoietic Syndrome or Bone Marrow Aplasia. G-CSF and GM-CSF in the management of acute marrow injury: focus on radiation-induced marrow aplasia (G.J. Lieschke). Cytokine therapy in bone marrow transplantation (M.R. Bishop, J.O. Armitage). Single and combination cytokine therapies for the treatment of radiation-induced hemopoietic injury (M.L. Patchen). Interleukin-3 and interleukin-3/GM-CSF combination therapy: results of clinical trials (A. Ganser et al. ). Studies to eliminate the absolute neutropenia high-dose chemotherapy (G. Spitzer et al. ). Thrombopoietic effects of recombinant human IL-6 in chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression (R.E. Isaacs). Hematopoietic growth factors in bone marrow failure states (D.F. Moore Jr., S. Vadhan-Raj). A nonhuman primate model for the study of effects of cytokines on hematopoietic reconstitution following chemotherapy-induced marrow damage (E.F. Winton et al. ). Ex vivo expansion of numbers of multipotential progenitor cells in human umbilical cord blood and considerations for the use of such cells for transplantation purposes (L. Ruggieri, H.E. Broxmeyer). Chemo and radiation protection with amifostine (R.L. Capizzi, P.S. Schein). In vivo application of interleukin-6 and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for the treatment of acute radiation syndrome (Z. Pojda et al. ). Radiation-induced neutropenia reduces the extent of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (R. Cachecho et al. ). Effect of cytokines on radiation-induced apoptosis in thymocytes and hematopoietic cells cultured in vitro (M.L. Hale et al. ). Sepsis. Selection of bacteria for animal models of sepsis (A.S. Cross et al. ). Therapeutic strategies in septic shock: tumor necrosis factor as a therapeutic target (J. Cohen et al. ). Interventions with anti-LPS, anti-TNF, and anti-coagulopathy measures in experimentally induced bacteremia/endotoxemia (S. Bahrami et al. ). Generation and preclinical development of CDP571, a human antibody engineered for TNF-alpha specificity (M.W. Bodmer). Strategies for modulation of systemic and tissue cykotine responses to sepsis (S.F. Lowry et al ). The roles of lipopolysaccharide-binding protein and bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein in regulating host responses to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (R.W. Scott, M.N. Marra). Soluble TNF receptors in lethal endotoxemia (K.M. Mohler et al. ). Survival enhancement and infection in mouse models of injury associated with radiation disasters (G.D. Ledney et al. ). L-carnitine in experimental septic shock (C. De Simone et al. ). Acute lung injury as a secondary response to endotoxin-induced mediators: prevention by HWA 138-a new xanthine derivative (S. Bahrami et al. ). Gastrointestinal Syndrome. Treatment strategies for radiation-induced gastrointestinal injuries (P.J. Gunter-Smith, A. Dubois). Elemental diets in treatment of gastrointestinal injury (A.H. McArdle).
