This atlas offers idealized sex- and age-specific images of development of the hand and wrist bones. The new edition describes an available iPhone app for calculating the deviation of a patient's age from the normal range and to predict possible growth delays.
In the past, determination of bone maturity relied on visual evaluation of skeletal development in the hand and wrist, most commonly using the Greulich and Pyle atlas. The Gilsanz and Ratib digital atlas takes advantage of digital imaging and provides a more effective and objective approach to assessment of skeletal maturity. The atlas integrates the key morphological features of ossification in the bones of the hand and wrist and provides idealized, sex- and age-specific images of skeletal development New to this revised second edition is a description and user manual for Bone Age for iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®, which can be purchased and used separately from this book. The App can be easily employed to calculate the deviation of the patient's age from the normal range and to predict a possible growth delay. This easy-to-use atlas and the related App will be invaluable for radiologists, endocrinologists, and pediatricians and also relevant to forensic physicians.

Vicente Gilsanz is a Professor of Radiology, Pediatrics and Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and Director of the Imaging Research Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.Dr. Gilsanz received his medical degree and his Ph.D. from Universidad Complutense, Madrid, Spain. He was trained in Internal Medicine (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota), Radiology (Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York), and Pediatric Radiology (Children’s Hospital of Boston, Massachusetts). As Director of Imaging Research, Dr. Gilsanz oversees investigators and assists in their research relating to the advancement of the use of imaging technology and the development of imaging markers related to pediatric disease risk. He’s especially interested in the identification of pediatric antecedents of common adult diseases, such as osteoporosis. He has conducted many novel investigations on the determinants and regulators of bone accrual during childhood and puberty.Osman Ratib is a Professor in Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Medical Imaging and Head of the Division of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital of Geneva.Dr. Ratib is board certified in Cardiology and Nuclear Medicine who obtained his medical degrees at the University of Geneva and a Ph.D. in Medical Imaging from University of California Los Angeles in 1989. He was appointed as Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology at UCLA from 1998 to 2005 when he returned to Geneva to be appointed as chair of the department of medical imaging and head of the division of Nuclear medicine. In his current position he is responsible of six clinical divisions including radiology, neuroradiology, radio-oncology, nuclear medicine and medical informatics as well as a cyclotron and pre-clinical imaging unit. He has pioneered several innovative projects including advanced cardiovascular PET-CT program and the first whole-body PET-MRI unit in Europe. He is also founding member and president of the OsiriX foundation, a non-profit organization for the promotion of Open-Source software in medicine.
