In 1978, Dr. Henry was one of the first physicians trained in emergency medicine to work in New York City. He chaired the first department of emergency medicine in New York City, chaired the New York City EMS Medical Advisory Committee, and was medical director of the first 24-hour paramedic service in Queens, New York. For more than 27 years, EMTs and paramedics have had the benefit of Dr. Henry's educational expertise. As an educator, speaker, and industry leader, Dr. Henry is well respected by students and peers worldwide. Dr. Henry has authored or coauthored more than 100 educational and research works, including journal articles and abstracts, textbooks, and book chapters over the course of his career. Dr. Henry is the current Medical Director of the EMS Program, New York State Department of Health; Chair of the New York State EMS Medical Advisory Committee; and Chair of the New York State EMS BioChem Terrorism Task Force. He is also Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stony Brook University. In 2003, he received the Outstanding Contibutor to EMA Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians. With more than 41 years of EMS experience, including 1 year as a combat medic in Vietnam, Ed Stapleton has experienced emergency medical care from a variety of perspectives. In 1974, Ed became one of the first paramedics in the New York City EMS system based in lower Manhatten. Ed Stapleton has been teaching EMS providers for more than 37 years at both the EMT and paramedic levels. Currently, he is Associate Professor and Director of Prehospital Education at Stony Brook University. Ed Stapleton has authored or coauthored more than 100 educational and research works, including journal articles, textbooks, films, and videos on EMS, ACLS, and CPR. Invluded among his accomplishments is his codevelopment of five paramedic training programs in the New York City and Long Island EMS systems, including the first associate degree program in New York state. Today Ed is an acclaimed EMS educator and routinely speaks at EMS and ECC conferences around the world.
