This Annals volume includes scholarly summaries of scientific achievement by winners and finalists candidates of the 2010 Prix Galien USA, Prix Galien International, and Prix Galien Bro Bono Humanitarian Awards (http://www.prix-galien-usa.com/index.php). The Prix Galien was created in France by pharmacist Roland Mehl, whose aim was to promote the country's significant advances in pharmaceutical research. Until the establishment of the Prix Galien, this discipline was unrecognized. Mehl brought together an eminent jury of clinicians, toxicologists, pharmacologists, and pharmacists to select and honor the most important drugs introduced to the public market and the most significant research teams in the pharmaceutical field. Since then, the Prix Galien has been introduced across Europe and Canada, and is now the most prestigious award of its kind in 11 countries. In addition, an International Prix Galien award is given each year, selected from previous winners. Contributions in the present volume — from top researchers in the biopharmaceutical industry, and the esteemed Bro Bono Humanitarian award winners President William Clinton and Dr. Philippe Douste-Blasy, with a special introduction by Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon — best embody humanitarianism and therapeutic promise in global healthcare problems. Winners and select finalists of the 2010 Prix Galien prizes represent biotechnical advances poised to combat a wide range of diseases and viruses.
