This updated second edition of Acute Ischemic Stroke: Imaging and Intervention provides a comprehensive account of the state of the art in the diagnosis and treatment of acute ischemic stroke. The basic format of the first edition has been retained, with sections on fundamentals such as pathophysiology and causes, imaging techniques and interventions. However, each chapter has been revised to reflect the important recent progress in advanced neuroimaging and the use of interventional tools. In addition, a new chapter is included on the classification instruments for ischemic stroke and their use in predicting outcomes and therapeutic triage. All of the authors are internationally recognized experts and members of the interdisciplinary stroke team at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The text is supported by numerous informative illustrations, and ease of reference is ensured through the inclusion of suitable tables. This book will serve as a unique source of up-to-date information for neurologists, emergency physicians, radiologists and other health care providers who care for the patient with acute ischemic stroke.

R. Gilberto González, MD, PhD Dr. R. Gilberto González is Chief of Neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles, over 75 chapters and reviews, and 2 books. His major clinical and research interests include the use of advanced imaging for diagnosis and image-guided therapy in acute stroke. Dr. González has been the principal investigator of multiple NIH R01 grants. He has served on 10 NIH Study Section, and is a member of the new NIH College of CSR Reviewers. He has served on the editorial boards of AJNR and JCAT and has received several awards, including the Outstanding Contributions to Research Award from the American Society of Neuroradiology. Joshua A. Hirsch, MD Dr. Hirsch is Director of Interventional Neuroradiology and Neuroendovascular Surgery and Associate Vice Chair for Interventional Care in the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Hirsch is widely regarded as a thought leader in the endovascular management of ischemic stroke. He will serve as president of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery in 2012-13 and is an associate editor of the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery. Michael Lev, MD Dr. Lev is an internationally recognized neuroradiologist with a research focus in stroke and neurovascular disease. He is Director of Emergency Neuroradiology and the Radiology Neurovascular Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School. He served as deputy editor for neuroimaging of the journal Radiology from August 2007 through March 2009 and has also been on the editorial board of the American Journal of Neuroradiology since 2000. Dr. Lev is Principal Investigator for the Partners Healthcare, NIH-funded, Specialized Program of Translational Research in Acute Stroke (SPOTRIAS) grant and has been an investigator for numerous other international neurovascular research projects. Pamela W. Schaefer, MD Dr. Pamela Schaefer is an Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and an Associate Radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she is Clinical Director of MRI, Associate Director of Neuroradiology, and Neuroradiology Fellowship Director. Her main research interests have been acute stroke and diffusion imaging. She has co-authored 80 articles, 25 book chapters and 1 book. Dr. Schaefer has been a Senior Editor of the American Journal of Neuroradiology for 5 years. She has served in many leadership positions at the Massachusetts General Hospital and for the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. Lee H. Schwamm, MD Dr. Lee H. Schwamm is Vice Chairman of Neurology and Director of Acute Stroke Services and the TeleStroke Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Schwamm has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews. He directs the stroke section of the Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Annual Conference and chairs the AHA “Get With the Guidelines” national steering committee. Dr. Schwamm is on the editorial board of Neurocritical Care. He has been the site principal investigator in multiple NIH- and industry-funded clinical trials in acute stroke care. His innovative work in applied healthcare technology has been recognized with the Computerworld Program Laureate for Innovation in Healthcare from the Smithsonian Institution, the Moby Award for Advances in Mobile Technology in Education, and the Bowditch Prize for Clinical Innovation at MGH. In 2009, he received the prestigious C. Miller Fisher award from the AHA for his pioneering work in the field of stroke.
