Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses. This inflammation may by due to infection - bacterial, fungal or viral, allergy or autoimmune diseases. Symptoms of sinusitis include fever, weakness, cough and congestion of the nose in addition to postnasal drip. This visual presentation describes the anatomy of the four types of sinuses - maxillary, frontal, sphenoidal and ethmoidal sinuses, and, the pathophysiology, symptoms, treatment options and management of sinusitis.

Robert C. Read, MBChB, BMedSci, MRCP, MD, FRCP, is a Professor of Infectious Diseases, University of Sheffield Medical School, UK, and the Honorary Consultant Physician for Sheffield University Hospitals. Apart from heading the Academic Unit of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease in the Division of Genomic Medicine, Prof. Read also serves as the Professional Affairs Officer and Member of Executive at the European Society for Clinical Microbiology. His primary research interests are in the field of pathogenesis and prevention of pneumoccocal and meningiococcal diseases, while his works focus on the interaction of pathogens with host mucosal elements.
