In this well-researched and fully documented analysis of the claims and benefits of chiropractic, Magner, with significant input from scientifically oriented chiropractors, measures the profession against the careful scientific standards and consumer protection requirements.
George J. Magner, III, received a bachelor of science degree (magna cum laude) in biology from Columbus College, Columbus, Georgia, in 1972 and spent a year as a graduate research assistant at Auburn University. He then worked for three years as a clinical laboratory technician and for eleven years as a biological research technician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1991, after concluding that chiropractors had permanently injured him, he founded Victims of Chiropractic, a support network and clearinghouse for information about chiropractic's hazards. Mr. Magner's royalties from the sale of this book have been donated to the National Council Against Health Fraud for use in public education. Stephen Barrett, M.D., a retired psychiatrist, is a nationally renowned author, editor, and consumer advocate. He has been collecting information about chiropractic for more than twenty-five years. He is a board member of the National Council Against Health Fraud and chairs its Task Force on Victim Redress. His thirty-eight books include The Health Robbers: A Close Look at Quackery in America; The Vitamin Pushers: How the "Health Food" Industry ls Selling America a Bill of Goods; Reader's Guide to "Alternative" Health Methods; and four editions of the college textbook Consumer Health: A Guide to Intelligent Decisions.
