This book will allow counselors to become better educated about their conditions and treatment protocols, to engage in decision making and behavior changes that will improve their quality of life, and to help manage the emotional effects that of occur as a result of changes in lifestyle and social roles. This book provides guidance on: counseling patients with common medical conditions from all groups; care giving strategies for parents with chronically ill children or persons with chronically ill spouses; and, identifying chronic medical conditions in patients.

Deborah Walsh, MA, MRC is the Executive Director of the Jasper County (SC) Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, an agency of 65 employees who serve approximately 200 developmentally disable adults. She is a licensed professional counselor with 18 years of experience working with developmentally disabled patients, an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina, and a member of the American Counseling Association. Prior to joining the Jasper County Board, she was director of residential services at the Beaufort County (SC) Department of Disabilities and Special Needs and held staff positions at clinics and centers in Georgia, New Jersey, and New York.
