Introduction. Topic: We indoctrinate the reader into our fakery philosophy: have fun and make these examples a springboard to your own wild experiments. We show exactly how to make the most effective and efficient use of the secrets shown.
Forget art, the focus here is on trickery. Learn how to antagonize (and impress) your friends and family by using Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to digitally doctor your images. In these pages, authors Janee Aronoff and Dave Diotalevi draw on their deep reserve of Photoshop skills to show you how to bring your own silly and sublime flights of fancy to life with the program. Each chapter in this volume represents a self-contained project in some aspect of Photoshop tomfoolery--from changing the background of a humdrum room to transforming an ordinary photo into a '60s Polaroid or digitally transplanting a friend's head to your dog. And although the authors refuse to be held responsible for any practical applications, the techniques they describe have important "serious" uses as well! Easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions peppered with screen shots at every turn ensure that even the most inexperienced Photoshop user will be able to re-create (and re-imagine) the shenanigans described here!

Educator and marketing pro Janee Aronoff has written numerous books and articles on Photoshop. She also created and maintains a comprehensive Photoshop resource Web site (www.myjanee.com). Dave Diotalevi is a technical writer with a background in nuclear physics and engineering. He and Janee have collaborated many times in recent years.

Introduction.

Topic: We indoctrinate the reader into our fakery philosophy: have fun and make these examples a springboard to your own wild experiments. We show exactly how to make the most effective and efficient use of the secrets shown.

I. EXAMPLES AND METHODS.

1. Wish You Were Here.

Topic: Ever wish you were part of an elite group? Want to make someone feel they had a lost weekend? Need to get the whole family together? No problem! We show how to insert that special someone somewhere they never were. And, as a bonus, we'll rub someone out, too.

2. Losing Your Head.

Topic: If you need a new body, this is the chapter for you. Replace a face or let heads roll. Whether you need to make that family portrait perfect or want to give yourself a Miss America figure, you'll find simple and satisfying solutions here.

3. May I Mayhem?

Topic: Mayhem is defined as the infliction of violent injury. You'll get your fill here. Body parts will go missing, scars and wounds will appear, and even rashes will flourish.

4. Background Checks.

Topic: Don't like the scenery? That's OK because now you're a digital alchemist that has power over color, texture, and tone. Import or create the perfect complement to any foreground.

5. Vintage or Vantage.

Topic: Antiquing is big in furniture-now you can do it to any photo. Make that image seem 100 years old. Turn a picture you took today into a 50's snapshot or a 60's Polaroid. As a bonus, we'll show some quick tricks for tuning up those old photos, too.

6. Just Face It.

Topic: Someone you know look just too darned good? Now you can age them overnight. Put some pounds on them while you're at it. Digital depilatory and hair restoration are our pleasure. Need to look even better than you do? You'll get the makeover of your life here.

7. Size Matters.

Topic: Dream of being taller? thinner? Photoshop's salon is always open. Want to take someone down a peg by transforming them into a short and squat dwarf? Create your "body" of work here. Need a disproportionately large body part? Well-that's just sick-but we'll do it!

8. How's the Weather?

Topic: Why let reality rule your life? Make it rain and snow at will. And-lights out-we'll show how to turn day into night.

9. But-Is it Art?

Topic: Need some fine art for that wall? On the cheap? This is where you fulfill your deepest desires to be a painter. Change photos into new masterpieces (OK-they'll be passably good). Also, become part of any painting you love.

10. Playing Dress Up.

Topic: Tired of your wardrobe? A splash of color, a few alterations, and you're good to go. Accessorize at will. Change that T-shirt or sweatshirt logo as easily as you change your mind.

11. Font Memories

Topic: No document is set in stone anymore. Change the text, the format, and the layout to suit your needs. Add banners or posters to give that "special message" that just needs saying. Street signs are never safe from a digital devil.

12. Noah's Lark.

Topic: Why should animals escape your notice? Transport, transform, and transect that pet. Make pictures that would frighten even Dr. Moreau.

II. Appendices: ALL THE FIXINS.

These are special chapters that deal with Photoshop techniques to handle specific problems that lessen the photorealism of fakes:

Appendix A: A Bit Edgy.

Topic: The heart and soul of many fakes is effective selections. We give tips and tricks to make quick and convincing extractions and insertions.

Appendix B: Lights, Camera-Awful.

Topic: Nothing ruins the mood of a fake quicker than inconsistent lighting, shadows, color, and focus. Conduct that new creation into a harmonious chorus.

Appendix C: Lost In Place.

Topic: Why is that object just hovering there? The viewer will never ask this question after you learn how to integrate and anchor any object into a background.

Appendix D: Elementary, My Dear.

Topic: Should Photoshop Elements users feel left out of the fun? Not after learning some surprisingly simple workarounds to boost the power of their program to true Photoshop proportions.
