This book presents basic design theories and principles and provides detailed analysis for excavation failure cases based on the author's research experience, aiming to provide a comprehensive picture of the subject matter. It focuses on the basal heave stability analysis, the apparent earth pressure as well as the strut force determination, the retaining wall deflection, the ground settlement, the protection measures such as jet grouting slabs or piles, case reports, back analysis methodology. From the very basic to the most advanced, it tries to attain theoretical rigorousness and consistency. On the other hand, this book also tries to cope with design practice, implemented by the recent publications from the authors. Students, researchers, and design engineers working in the field of civil engineering could benefit from this book.

Dr. Wengang ZHANG is currently full professor in School of Civil Engineering, Chongqing University, China. He obtained his BEng and MEng degrees in Hohai University, China, as well as PhD in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research interests focus on impact assessment on the built environment induced by underground construction, as well as big data and machine learning in geotechnics and geoengineering. He is now the members of the ISSMGE TC304 (Reliability), TC309 (Machine Learning), and TC219 (System Performance of Geotechnical Structures). Dr Zhang has published more than 80 SCI-indexed papers as the first or corresponding author, including 8 ESI highly cited papers and 2 hot papers, with in-all WOS citations of over 2400, selected as the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2020. Prof. Han-long LIU is the Deputy vice President of Chongqing University and Chair professor in Geotechnical Engineering, School of Civil Engineering. He obtained his Bachelor degree from Zhejiang University in 1986 and Ph.D degree from Hohai University in 1994, China. He was awarded the Chang Jiang Scholar Award by the Ministry of Education in 2007 and the Outstanding Young Scholar Award by the National Science Foundation of China in 2008. He won seveval national awards from government and the best research award of Japanese Geotechnical Society(JGS). He was Huang Wen-xi geotechnical Lecturer in 2013. Prof Liu is Chair of International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) TC303. He has published several highly cited papers in international reputable journals and is the Chinese Most Cited Researchers for consecutive years.
